Rail cum road Bogibeel Bridge is finally going to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Modi on 25th December 2018 as the people of Assam were waiting for this from a long time. This bridge was so in news and under controversy as it missed deadlines and various protests happened for this 4.9 km long bridge.

This bridge will be helping the people and will be connecting the banks of Brahmaputra. Economic development will also take place of the state and will improve the defense movement along the India-China frontiers. Speaking about the bridge, former Assam chief minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta, said: “It has been a long-pending demand of the people of the region and I feel glad that it has become a reality now.”

The bridge was sanctioned a long time ago in 1997 and the foundation stone was laid by HD Deve Gowda who was the prime minister then. The work started after PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee came in power and he also inaugurated the work of the bridge on April 21, 2002. The bridge will be seen as the Asia’s second longest bridge which will be having three-lane roads on the top and double line rail below.

Bogibeel Bridge faced many controversies as it was having a national project status in 2007 and was having a deadline to be completed till 2009 but all the deadlines were missed and the budget elevated from 1,700 crores to 5000 crores. A defense official said that “This bridge is part of infrastructure projects to improve logistics along the border in Arunachal Pradesh. This includes the construction of a trans-Arunachal highway on the north bank of the Brahmaputra, and new road and rail links,” So far, troops moving between Dhemaji and Dibrugarh were travelling over 500km via the Kaliabhomora Bridge in Sonitpur to reach the other side.
