In the recent development, it is done by breaking the bonds which exist between the oxygen and hydrogen in water. It can be a key to the creation of the hydrogen that is in the sustainable manner which is by finding the economically viable technique. As per the researchers, the report of this new hydrogen generating catalyst can able to clear as that of obstacles which are in abundance as well as in stable form in acid conditions along with the efficiency.
In the journal Angewandte Chemie, the researchers who all are from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign report that in an electrocatalytic material that is made from mixing the metal compounds along with the substance which is called as perchloric acid.
The electrolyzers which are used for the electricity to break the water molecules into oxygen as well as hydrogen. This is one of the most efficient devices that will be used to corrosive acids along with the electrode materials. They are made of the metal compounds that are iridium oxide or ruthenium oxide. Iridium oxide is said to be the more stable of the two, but the iridium oxide is one of the least abundant elements of the Earth, as said by the researchers. So, for this reason, the researchers are now searching the alternative material.
As per Hong Yang, who is the co-author of this study as well as the professor of the Chemical and biomolecular engineering at Illinois, said that the previous work was said to be performed with the help of the electrolyzers which are made from the two elements one is metal, and other is oxygen. In this study, it was found out that if this compound has got two metal elements, then yttrium as well as ruthenium along with the oxygen the rate of the water-splitting reaction is increased.
